Can I learn how to draw? Art Diaries #0

When I think of habits and skills I left behind in my teenage years, drawing definitely shouldn’t be one of them. And yet….

To clarify, I wasn’t exactly good at drawing, but I could draw random objects and landscapes of passable quality, and did so pretty regularly, for fun, to pass the time, and for high school art classes. Today? I couldn’t draw a mug with a reference photo if my life depended on it. It’s just one of the things I used to like that I can’t seem to do anymore, like reading a book a week.

I’ve tried to pick it up again over the past couple years but it’s never stuck – so far all I’ve accomplished is buying procreate, along with several physical art supplies (sketchbook, brush markers, colored pencils) and then not using any of them.

Something I’d very much like to do this year is find my own voice, whatever that may be. Of late, I’ve noticed myself seeking out/absorbing other people’s opinions way too quickly without forming my own. If it’s a post or youtube video, I’m scrolling through the comments ASAP. If it’s a book or TV show it’s me reading articles, reviews, and reddit threads about it and being unable to say a single thing on my own about what I’ve just watched/read.

In real life conversations I sometimes shy away from sharing my opinions at all because I realise I wouldn’t be able to back them up if I had to.

It’s a scary thought.

So I’ve started this blog 😋 I’ll be blogging about art, media, and general nonsense.

The Plan

As someone who’s made (and failed to follow) 100+ health, fitness, productivity, and general ‘turn my life around’ plans, I think the key here is very chilled out consistency. As in, enough of a structure to help me reach my goal, but not so many that missing a single day can throw me off track.

How long does it take to learn how to draw? I guess it depends on what knowing how to draw means 🤔 I don’t know, so I won’t be giving myself an end date. It’s definitely easier to progress when you have a clear goal in mind, but I won’t let that stop me from starting.

Here’s what I have so far:

Every month, I’ll pick a theme – something I’d like to master (I use that term loosely) or focus on that month. Throughout the month, I’ll post whatever I make on my instagram, and at the end of the month I’ll write a summary for this blog + share the resources I used.

Starting slow, February’s theme is plants. Later months will probably be landscapes, faces, anatomy, and animals, or something of the sort. This whole thing is totally liable to change as I figure out what I’m doing! At some point I’d love to experiment with different art styles too.

I’m shooting for six drawings this month:

  • Piece 1 : Draw from a tutorial
  • Piece 2 : Draw from a reference photo
  • Piece 3 : Draw a pattern
  • Piece 4 : Draw a character
  • Piece 5 : Draw from real life
  • Piece 6 : Draw something that doesn’t exist

Since this is my first post on this blog that nobody’s heard of, I don’t know how many people are actually reading this, but if you’re here, you should totally bookmark this page so you can read my next blog post! And follow my insta page to look at all the weird stuff I make. Ok bye.

[…] Welcome back! Hard to believe it’s been (over) a whole month. If you’re new here, this is the first in what I hope will be a monthly series where I document my creative progress. If you want to check out my initial post where I introduced this challenge, you can find it here. […]
